Challenge

Design for repairability.

The challenge was to imagine a modular and fully demountable design where all the components can be accessible to be repaired, cleaned, updated, or replaced. We wanted to push ourselves to imagine the first eco-designed air purifier based on sustainable design principles & eco-design methodologies applied all across its life cycle steps.

Process

Extending the product’s life cycle.

Our goal was to significantly extend the product’s end of life to reduce its life cycle impacts. We also wanted to challenge ourselves to have no interfaces on the product, so that the user is only invited to plug, unplug, and disassemble to service the components.

Result

Piloting the user experience.

By eliminating the analog interface and creating a phygital connected product, the user is empowered to use the mobile application to track their air quality and energy consumption, all while customizing all the features from afar.

Eco-designed

Olo is the first fully eco-designed air purifier based on sustainable design principles & eco-design methodologies applied all across its life cycle.

Fully repairable

Through its modular & demountable design, all the components are accessible to be repaired, cleaned, updated, or replaced. Olo’s end of life is significantly extended, thus reducing its life cycle impacts by a whopping 70%.

Reduced energy consumption

Our research has shown that 85% of standard air purifiers’ impacts result from the product’s electricity consumption during the use phase of its lifecycle. With its optimized features & piloted interactions, Olo reduces its environmental impacts by an impressive 46% compared to similar products on the market.
